Facebook... the world's biggest, most popular site of all of history. And it's full of shit!
Don't get me wrong, I'm registered on it and have been for years, but then again, that's probably why I'm writing this blog - people are in desperate need of attention, to the point of narcissism.
Here's what I mean (an example definition taken from another site) : "They are simply the most immature people on earth. They are pancake people, superficial, running around trying to puff themselves up, always looking for people to exploit and for people to admire them. "
Follow that up with this :
"
Narcissism, as in excessive or erotic interest in oneself and one's physical appearance. noun (See egotism) definition:
• Psychology; extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.
• Psychoanalysis; self-centeredness arising from failure to distinguish the self from external objects, either in very young babies or as a feature of mental disorder.
"
And why am I referring to narcissism? Easy. I've come across so many profiles that contain hundreds, some even number in the thousands, of photos of the user. Most of those photos are the classic face-shot, with various expressions (though not always!).
Another narcissistic characteristic I've come across is people that "like" their own status update! WTF.... And, my favourite (I mean that as in it's the one I hate the most), is when facebook users comment on their own photos, most usually in a scant style, and they are fucking complaining how they look with the intention of getting a moral boost by others with shit such as "awww, you look awesome hunny... luv u"...
Sickening.
There's more, like the lazy typing, using single letters for complete words (ex : luv U 2, b4 ny time, ect ect), but I won't get into that just yet. Let's dive more into this ever-increasing disorder.
Someone with Narcissistic Personality disorder (NPD) has at least 5 of these symptoms:
- has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
- is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
- believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
- requires excessive admiration
- has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
- is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
- lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
- is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
- shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
Let the attack begin! I won't do them all, but this is what pisses me off about facebook and how society is embracing unwittingly the forfeit of intelligence, common sense, and most of all : empathy.
#1 - This can be explained by people always updating their status with the stupidest, meaningless piece of unimportant combination of letters ever produced. "Going for a walk", "Today, I did this and that, good night everyone", "it's 4am and I can't sleep", ect ect.
#2 - The famous "Status Shuffle" annoying facebook app that people always comment on thinking it's god's genius wisdom personally at work, aimed directly at them, yet don't realize it's full of shit and misspelled most of the time.
#3 - Christ... where to begin? Have you ever seen those status updates where people complain about others, yet don't name them or refer directly to them in any way? Then ensues a suite of comments, mostly supportive, yet written in general, not towards anyone specifically, and henceforth initiating that much needed narcissistic feeling of feeling "special" and "understood" by certain people.
#4 - LOL I can't decide which should come first - the hundreds or thousands of self-pictures or the comments in each of them? You choose.
#5 - Complaining about anything on facebook as if those things being complaining about should never, ever, ever, ever happen to you! Life's a bitch, bitch, find a way to deal with it!
And to add fuel to the fire, stoking this shit up, here's an additional bunch of signs YOU may be narcissistic and why you use facebook so fuckin' much!
- Jealousy and possessiveness
- Excessive need to feel special, adored, loved, appreciated, or admired
- Rage attacks when you do not sufficiently meet his/her needs
- Controlling behaviors (trying to control how you spend your time, who you talk to, how you dress, etc.)
- Inflated self-esteem, or grandiosity (bragging, "fishing" for compliments)
- Dramatic, insecure behaviors
- Expecting you to take responsibility for making him/her feel better about him/herself
- Blaming you for behaviors or feelings (i.e., "YOU made me do this," or "YOU made me feel this way.")
- Not taking responsibility for angry behavior and justifying angry outbursts
- An attitude that demonstrates "the world revolves around me" and "you need to cater to my ideas, opinions, thoughts, and feelings."
- An unwillingness to reflect on his/her own behaviors

And so, in summation, at least for the time being (I have a feeling I might come back to this post and add to it!), human society (yes, I'm going that far!) is going down the tubes and a big part of that is thanks to facebook and other social networking sites. What first started out as BBS chatrooms, then expanded to HTML chatrooms, then IM such as ICQ, MSN, ect, then dating sites, you now find yourself with social networking. It's been the cause of divorces, getting fired from work, hermit behaviours, there's even an addiction to it... Some people just can't live without their facebook activities. So how is that NOT pointing to narcissism, ultimately?
Let me know.
